The Last Stand 2012

By Robert Allan Brown

Kevin Garnett aka "The Big Ticket" was traded to the Boston Celtics in the summer of 2007, this was after the Celtics traded for Ray Allen. To say the least I was like a kid in a candy store. My beloved Celtics had fallen on such hard times with the death of Len Bias Reggie Lewis while making some pretty bad draft choices. I knew the passion and high energy Kevin Garnett brought each and every game and being such a great one on one defender and team defender would make the Celtics the team to beat. I was right, the Celtics went on to dominate the regular season and dominated the Lakers in the finals.

Kevin Garnett is and has always been a very unselfish great all around player. In my personal opinion he is one of the best power forwards to ever play the game. There is nothing he cannot do. For his career he averages around 20 points per game, 10 rebounds, 4 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks. The way he rotates on defense is a thing of beauty and how his energy rubs off on others just shows how great of a team leader he is.

Since the addition of Kevin Garnett the Celtics has been a top 3 defensive team in the league. Even this year the Celtics only gave up about 91 points per game. This is one of the main reason why he is so important to the Celtics for next year success. As long as he can still rebound, play with energy, play good one on one defense and team help defense the Celtics will always be a team to be dealt with. Personally if I had to start a team today a guy like Kevin Garnett would be one of my top choices. He is very under rated when it comes to all time on some peoples list simply because he played on some not so great Minnesota Timberwolves teams. Not to mention the West was pretty stacked for most of his career. To say Garnett failed in Minnesota is very unfair considering that franchise has never won anything and being the small market they are, probably never will.

Kevin Garnett is starting to slow down some, he is getting older and I don't believe he will play much longer. I do however believe he has one more good year left. Next year I am calling it the last stand 2012. The last stand is simply the last stand for the great big three of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce. All three of these guys can still play the Celtics just need to build a solid bench around them and I truly believe the rest will take care of itself.

How important is Kevin Garnett to the Celtics? He simply is the heart and soul of the team.

Top Ten Gift Ideas For Basketball Players

Old, but still lots of fun

Basketball players can be tough to purchase gifts for unless you are in the know. My husband loves playing basketball and has opened my eyes to the possibilities.

1. Jumpsoles

Jumpsoles" are platforms that attach onto your sneakers they focus your body weight onto your calves to train you to bounce off the balls of your feet like a "powerful cat"! With continued practice they will help the player to increase his/her vertical jump. My husband has used them and found great success and improvement in his vertical jump. You can also purchase the Proprioceptor which attaches to the Jumpsoles" to make them even more effective, my husband also uses these. Adding the Proprioceptor will bring results faster. The cost of the Jumpsoles" is $69.95 and with the Proprioceptor system they are $99.90.

2. Ball & Water Bag

There are a wide variety of bags available, the key is to find one that will hold a bag and at the very least some water. I have seen them with room for sneakers as well. This gift is practical and will be used often. You will need to decide whether to purchase a backpack or duffle style. For players, like my husband, who ride their bike or walk to the courts a backpack works much better. For someone looking to keep an extra set of clothes the duffle may be the way to go. Another option is the Original Ballbag ($24.99), which can be purchased in the logo of their favorite team, this is worn across the body on a angle or a newer edition is in backpack style, has more storage room and a heftier price tag ($59.99). Bags geared toward basketball are better then a run of the mill bag because they will have room for the ball! My favorite has been one we picked up at Target, it is an NBA drawstring backpack style with rope straps, he can fit a ball and a gallon of water!

3. SLAM Magazine

Give a subscription to Slam and you're giving the magazine that takes its readers behind the scenes and inside the NBA. Slam is $12.97 for a yearly subscription! They will also send a gift card so you can personally announce your gift subscription. With a subscription a lot of online features also become active for forums where your player can exchange comments with other players!

4. Protective Gear

I would never have thought of this but recently I have seen how easily injury can occur. Protect your player with any or all of the following suggestions. Begin with mouth guards, they can be purchased at any sporting goods store and range from $1.99 to $19.99, they have guards geared for basketball and even for adults and youth.

McDavid is well known for their HexPad Technology, which provide unsurpassed comfort and protection. In addition to offering elbow, knee, and ankle braces and pads they offer shirts and shorts with built in protection. The 7910 HexPad 3 Pad Body Shirt ($59.99) is a professional sleeveless compression shirt made to protect the ribs and spine. The compression fabric is also made to support large muscle groups to reduce muscle pulls and fatigue.

Sometimes a player just needs a little extra support, braces and supports can be purchased at any sporting goods store as well.

5. Sneakers

Basketball requires a certain type of sneaker. Some people are easy to purchase sneakers for and do not need to try them on, depending on the person you are buying them for you may want to take them with you or get as much information as you can before hand from the player and then purchase them from a store with a good return/exchange policy. If you opt for the latter make sure that the time frame for returns will not be over when the gift is given!

Fortunately for me, my husband is always the same size, so I can shop pretty easily. Although he has been happy in the past with Addidas and Reebok, And 1 comes out as his favorite always.

I would be remiss if I did not mention there is a new sneaker on the market created Stephon Marbury that is going to be selling for $14.95, he felt that he wanted to make sneakers more affordable. They are going to be sold exclusively at Steve and Barry's.

6. Sleeveless Shirt that Absorbs Sweat

As anyone who plays basketball or knows someone who does, sweat is usually an issue. With this sort of shirt it makes playing more enjoyable for the player since they are not saturated and remain cooler.

New Balance offers a fantastic Sleeveless Temp Top for $25.00. It is designed with Lighting Dry fabric so as you perspire, moisture is wicked away from your skin. They also offer shorts ($27.99) in this fabric, as well, which can also be useful.

7. Basketball Hoop or Shooting Ring

Depending on the space available your options may be limited. You can purchase a free standing hoop with backboard and stand. These are sold to either be permanently placed in the ground or on rolling platforms.

You can also purchase a single hoop that attaches to an outside wall. Very similar to this standard hoop is a shooting ring, which is smaller than a regular hoop to improve shooting aim. These items can be found in sporting goods stores online and in person, retailers like Target also carry them. Prices range too greatly to list depending on which type it is and also if it is professional this will increase price.

8. Lessons from a Retired Pro

Often times retired Professionals Players, especially from Europe will offer lessons. If you are lucky enough to live in the Orlando area you can get lessons from Kelvin Coggins, a former professional player in Europe.

You can also check special event auctions, sometimes professional players volunteer to be auctioned off for lessons. This of course, can be quite costly.

9. Personalized Jersey with their Favorite Pro Team

You have a choice between Authentic, cost ranging from $189.99 to $219.99, or Replicas, cost ranging from $59.99 to $69.99. The authentic is a high quality jersey your player will love for years to come, especially with his/her name and number personalized on it!

10. Tickets to a game

You can purchase tickets to a local game whether college or professional it is a gift to please. Make sure to get two so he/she does not have to go alone! I find that as much as my husband enjoys going to watch the Knicks, he is just as happy to go watch anyone play. He loves playing and loves watching!

If you head to ticket master you can search by sport, basketball specifically, then enter your zip for any and all basketball games in your area!

Happy Shopping and if all else fails a new basketball is always nice too! Especially the new NBA balls!

Paul Pierce - One of the Greatest Celtics of All Time

By Robert Allan Brown

I think Shaq said it best to a Boston reporter back in 2001. He told the reporter that he knew Paul could play, but he didn't know he could play like this. He told the reporter that Paul Pierce was the truth.

The Boston Celtics drafted Paul Pierce in the 1998 draft. I remember this draft like it was yesterday because Paul Pierce is exactly who I wanted the Celtics to draft. Honestly there is nothing this guy cannot do on a basketball court. He can dribble, rebound, pass, defend. He can shoot the three, free throws, and his mid level game is the best in the business. He is one of three Celtics to score over 20,000 points in his career with the other two being Larry Bird and John Havlicek. For his career he averages 22 points per game, 6 rebounds per game, 4 assist, 1.5 steals. He is a lock down defender and plays great team defense. One of the best things about Paul Pierce is the fact that no moment is to big for him. What I mean is he plays his best against the best. He loves the big stage and is not afraid to take the big shot. In my book he is very clutch and his nickname fits.

In the summer of 2007 the Celtics traded for Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett and I was so happy that we finally were building a championship team around Paul Pierce. Let's face it he played for some pretty bad Celtic teams and I am thankful that he did not bailout on us like Lebron James did to the Cavs. Paul Pierce is also a very unselfish player. I have never seen a player do more with the number of shots he gets. Here goes a guy who can create his own shot and pretty much shoot when he wants, but he always makes the extra pass when needed and his step back is a thing of beauty. Most right-handed players including myself when they do a step back they go to the left, but Paul does it and goes to the right better than anyone I have ever seen. Paul has been one of the best players in the NBA for years, but in my opinion he never got the credit he deserved. When the Celtics won a champions in 2008, the look on his face and the other Celtics was priceless to me.

Paul Pierce a complete player, the truth. Just like Shaq said.

The Harlem Globetrotters - Magicians of Basketball

Since 1926 the Harlem Globetrotters have thrilled audiences around the world as the premier exhibition basketball team. Combining their talented athleticism with comedy and theater, the Globetrotters have played over 25,000 games entertaining young and old and becoming ambassadors of goodwill.

The team originated in the 1920s where all the original players grew up on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. Most of the players attended Chicago's first predominately black Wendell Phillips High School. Although they were from Chicago, owner Abe Saperstein decided to name them the Harlem Globetrotters to point out that the players were African-Americans and that they had traveled the globe. They did not play in Harlem until 1968.

The Globetrotters started out as a serious competitive team and won admiration when the all-black team beat the all-white Lakers 61-59 in February 1948. Even though they had talented players, the team also had a flair for entertainment, often clowning around for the audience only after gaining a safe lead in the game. As more black players were drafted by the NBA during the 1950s, it became harder for the Globetrotters to attract and retain top talent.

Eventually the Globetrotters became known more for entertaining audiences with their comic routines than a competitive sports team. The team's act was to amaze the spectators in their skillful handling of several basketballs in the way they passed, juggled balls between players, and used their incredible coordination to make difficult shots. Many NBA greats have played for the Globetrotters. Players like Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain, Connie "The Hawk" Hawkins, Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton, as well as baseball Hall of Famers Bob Gibson and Ferguson Jenkins. During the 1970s and 80s they had a popular team member, Fred "Curly" Neal remembered as the best dribbler of that era of the team's history. Their first female player was Olympic gold medalist Lynette Woodard who was signed in 1985.

Although beloved by audiences globally, the Globetrotters have not been free of scrutiny and criticism. During the civil rights era they were accused of "Tomming for Abe", a reference to Uncle Tom and white owner Abe Saperstein. This accusation stemmed from the fact that the players were all African American and their skits involved so much buffoonery. Despite the critics, many prominent civil rights activists maintained that the Globetrotters were indeed a positive influence and did not portray blacks as stupid.

In 1993 under new owner and former player, Mannie Jackson, the Globetrotters began playing competitive basketball after having played hundreds of exhibition games. The team had a run of 8,829 straight victories since 1971 until they lost in 1995 to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's All Star Team in Vienna, Austria. They have played over 20,000 exhibition games in 118 countries and have achieved a winning percentage of 98.4%.

The Harlem Globetrotters have been featured in several of their own films and television series over the years and continue to entertain audiences around the world. Their new generation of star players will continue the tradition of playing exhibition games and providing audiences with entertainment and the thrill of watching these magicians of basketball perform their magic.

Performance enhancing drugs. Anabolic steroids, human growth hormone, asthma and ED in professional basketball.

Anabolic steroid enhanced players were so far mostly related to baseball, athletics, cycling, football, but not basketball. Even though Rashard Lewis and O.J. Mayo high ranked professionals were each banned from playing for ten games because they're tests for steroids were positive. Everything was kept low profile and not discussed much by either the fans or the media.
However the fact remains that an average basketball player has gained over 20 pounds of lean muscle. The difference can be measured as well as seen with the naked eye, rent an old flick or watch ESPN for classic basketball games, now compare the players than with todays buffs. I don't see a Wilt Chamberlain type anywhere. Lots of Carl Malone's though.
It's quite an interesting, nutrition surelly had something to do with it, true, but players are also playing more games with less recouperation and rest in between. The basketball players today are much more athletic. Such a big change in such short time is very hard to be acredited to better training and nutrition alone. Deca durabolin or dianabol on the other hand can make such a difference in a very short amount of time. It is also true, that we have seen many drastic tranformations where a player came in 20 or even 30 pounds heavier than the previous season. Many asked what happened to many European players that are known to be less buffed.
Are basketball players using anabolic steroids? I don't know, but they would be stupid not to. When asked in the interviews what would they do to up their game most answer; anything and everything.
Most other athletes from baseball players to football players have tested postitive for performance enhancing drugs. And basketball is very demanding and taxing on the athlete as they are taller than most athletes in most other sports, which brings along a higher risk of injury. Anabolic steroids alow for faster recovery, better endurance, more strength. With their health, career and very livelyhood on the line, they would really be stupid not to.
As we can read in the may ESPN magazine Chicago bulls Derrick Rose an awesome player that was also chosen as the MVP of the regular basketball season. Basketball has an enormous anabolic steroid issue. Mr. Rose is calling for a more level playing field hinting that those basketball players that use anabolic steroids have a unfair advantage over the natural steroid free athlete.
When asked to asses the situation regarding performance enhancing drugs similar to Sustanon or oral dianabol in basketball and national basketball league in particular from one to ten. One meaning: What are Performance Enhancing drugs and ten meaning: Everybody is juicing*.
Derrick paused and than said about seven. Adding that the steroid issue in NBA is huge and than called for a more level playing field where nobody would have an advantage over the next athlete.
In fact, some players in NBA are so buffed they could enter a bodybuilding contest. Mind that theese are 7 footers, and we all know how hard it is for a tall person to pack on muscle without Deca durabolin or dianabol .
Well, at least we know Derrick Rose isn't using steroids and he plays great basketball, so did Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan.

*Juicing is a slang / laymans term for anabolic steroid use.

The Psychology Of Great Sportmanship - The Champion Mindset In Basketball

By Jorge Joe Moreno

One of the most important points in playing basketball is the psychology of good sportsmanship. This mental attitude understands and accepts that there will be a winner and loser to every game. Although one should give everything possible to win, each player, team and coach must accept that there will be days of defeat. And, regardless of outcome, every game should be ended with modesty, respect and the feeling that one has given his or her best effort. This attitude provides the foundation to becoming a great sportsman in basketball.

The object of a basketball game may be to win, but it must be won fairly. To win by means of cheating, is in essence a defeat and an embarrassment to the honor of the game. We cannot control the actions of our opponents, but we can determine our personal response to every game situation. Therefore, while seeking victory, every player on a team should play to the limits of his or her strength, conditioning and ability. If that is done, then a victory against one's inner beast has been won. And, winning the inside game represents true victory.

Many basketball athletes feel they owe the public nothing. They may think the crowd should accept any performance regardless of intent or outcome. However, when the public honors a team with their attendance and team support, it becomes the duty of every player to give of his or her best. In so doing, these players can repay the honor paid them. The basketball star owes the fans as much respect and dignity as an actor owes an audience. Thus, when all competitors give their best in a fair way, the sport itself becomes better. In this way, players and fans receive their reward.

As a player, the fist thing to do on the court is to deny your opponent the chance to play as he or she would want to play. In other words, we want to force our challenger into difficult and uncomfortable situations. To reach this end, one should study the opponent, look for weaknesses and exploit those faults. A team doesn't decide on the mode of attack. This mode is presented, instead, by the opponent's weaknesses. The only choice is whether or not to use that weakness. The team does the best at exploiting the faults of the challenger, stands the better chance of winning the game.

Other things one should keep in mind while competing, is to refuse to change a winning system. A successful team aims to expand on what works, and replace what doesn't. A good team must be ready to adapt to the changing tide in every game. But, to reach this end, a team must truly examine what is happening during the game.
For example, if a team feels they are playing well, yet find themselves not yet in the lead at the end of the quarter or halftime, the team's game plan man not have to be changed. There might be only a need for patience. Evaluate the opponent. They may be in the lead, but at what costs?? Thy could find themselves exhausted, in foul trouble or very frustrated. In these cases, most likely, the losing team may be executing correctly. It might be only a matter of time until the lead changes in their favor. But, for a team that is simply outclassed by the opponent, a new approach may be needed to overcome this challenge.

In a basketball game, a team may have to experiment with unorthodox moves when they find themselves facing a superior team. However, if things should change in their favor, these experimental risks may have to cease. Taking chances is something to do to alter the lead of the game, not to maintain it.

Above all, a team must keep their confidence and intensity at high levels regardless of the score. Each player should refuse to show fatigue, pain or frustration. Showing these things may serve to strengthen a challenger. Instead a team should determine to exhibit a constant attitude of confidence. These small attitude adjustments can easily turn a 5 point deficit into a 3 point victory.

In Basketball, one must master physical and mental abilities. However, to reach one' potential, one must adopt a attitude of competition that boosters confidence and sportsmanship that can be felt by fellow teammates, challengers and fans. That type of mindset constitutes the psychology of great sportsmanship.

What I Would Like to See From Rajon Rondo in 2012

By Robert Allan Brown

First let me say that I love Rondo, the heart, passion and desire he has shown over the years sacrificing his body and in the Miami Heat series playing with a dislocated elbow was remarkable.

He is a true warrior and I personally would not trade him for any other point guard in the world after the heart and desire he showed last year. With all that said there are some things he does very well and others that he needs to address.

1) Shooting - He does not have to turn into Ray Allen, but he has to develop the ability to knock down a 18 foot shot consistently Way to many teams are starting to clog the lane and play way off of Rondo daring him to shoot. Shooting is all about repetition and confidence. If he could shoot the ball consistently the spacing would be much better and it would give Ray Allen and Paul Pierce the room they need to work.

2) Free throws - A guy who handles the ball as much as Rondo has to be about to knock down 75% of his free throws. In my opinion sometimes he appears passive and doesn't go to the basket as much as he could simply to avoid shooting free throws. He needs to attack the basket, get the Celtics in the penalty early because as a team we settle way to much for jumpers and do not shoot enough free throws.

3) Turn overs - A guy who handles the ball as much as Rajon Rondo is going to have some turn overs and I understand that. The thing that drives me crazy are the turn overs that are not forced. Rondo has to stop driving to the basket with the sole intention of passing. When he does this he leaves his feet and when the passing lane is taken away it usually turns into a turn over. This type of play happens at the very least once a game. He needs to drive to the basket with the intention of scoring and if that is taken away pass it. Rondo needs to play smart, fast, but under control.

All of these things can be corrected and I truly believe Rajon Rondo has the heart, desire and ability to get better and take the Boston Celtics to the next level. It all starts with confidence. I notice that Rondo confidence and play was down when his best friend Kendrick Perkins was traded. The trade really hurt the team chemistry and with Rondo play dropping off a little it really showed. Losing has a way of refocusing a team and I truly believe 2012 will be the last stand for the Celtics and the big 3. The reason I call it the last stand is simply because of age and contracts and even though I would love Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen and Paul Pierce to play forever I know they are not. Rondo is a key component in 2012 of getting the Celtics back to the promise land.

How Team Play Overcame Raw Talent - Dallas Mavericks Defeat The Miami Heat In The NBA Finals

By Eric Alexander Bates

The Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat faced each other in the 2011 NBA Finals. This matchup was an interesting matchup for many reasons. For one, these two teams faced each other in the NBA Finals five years ago. The Miami Heat ended up defeating the Dallas Mavericks in six games that year in what was considered a very controversial series due to poor officiating. Dwyane Wade was the hero of the series, averaging almost 35 points per game. The Heat had more talent that year, and their talent overcame the Mavericks who were carried almost solely by their MVP, Dirk Nowitzki.

This most recent NBA Finals matchup seemed like it was going to play out the same way. The Miami Heat had just recently acquired LaBron James from the Cavaliers and Chris Bosh from the Raptors. With Wade, James and Bosh, also known as "The Big 3", the Miami Heat had the most talent on the basketball court no matter which team they played, and they were considered practically unbeatable in a playoff series. In the 2011 NBA Playoffs, all of this seemed spot on accurate until the Miami Heat faced the Dallas Mavericks in the Finals, where teamwork triumphed talent.

Just before the NBA Finals began, fans and oddsmakers both had the Heat as large favorites over the Mavericks. The Heat were young, quick and extremely talented, while the Mavericks were comprised of much older and slower veteran players. Along with the Mavericks' age, however, came much basketball wisdom. They knew how to account with their weaknesses by passing the ball around the court faster, creating open looks at the basket. They also all played a part in the scoring department, unlike the Heat. While Dirk Nowitzki undoubtedly was the Mavericks' main scorer, there were six other Mavericks players who scored over 40 points throughout the series. Outside of "The Big 3", the Heat only had one player who scored over 40 points in the series, Mario Chalmers.

The Mavericks team defense was also much better than the Heat's. They were great at shifting from defending one player to another, switching from man to zone defense when necessary, and in rotating off of picks. The Heat, while they did play good defense, relied on their talent moreso than basketball fundamentals. So while they were able to recover at times because of their athleticism and talent, this would cause them to play less structured defense, allowing the Mavericks to get a lot more open shots.

In the end, the NBA fans were able to witness what the game of basketball was orignally all about: teamwork. True teamwork finally overcame raw talent, and it was a beautiful thing to watch. Fundamentals and intelligence overcame youth, speed, and agility. The Dallas Mavericks were written off by most before the series even started, and after their victory people are now understanding that teamwork should once again be a big focus when creating a successful gameplan.

Quick Tips To Purchasing The Right Basketball Shoe For You

By Ted Parry

Basketball shoes have gotten a lot more complex from the original Converse

There are many different types of basketball shoes. This is due to the many different types of basketball players out there. Some are small, skillful and fast while others are tall and strong. These different types require diverse characteristics so every individual player. This article will break down the types of players and give you an insight into what types of shoes you might need.

Power Player

The first type of player to be mentioned is the power player. This type of player depends on his strength and most commonly height to get the advantage during the game. Since he's going to be using more power movement the shoes are going to get worn down quicker. This means that he should be looking for shoes with great shock absorption, durability and cushioning. These factors will help to keep your shoes in a good position and will give you the advantage. However you will usually have to sacrifice on weight and will be looking at the higher end of the weight range to choose the ones that are right for you.

All-Around Player

The all around player will be utilising all areas of the court and will be good at many different things. This type of player should be looking at basketball shoes with moderate ankle support and stability. These two factors will keep your feet safe from any position you may find yourself in. With regards to weight you should be choosing basketball shoes that hit the middle ground (around 15 ounces) so that you can take advantage of any situation when it arises.

Fast Player

A fast player is one that takes advantage of his skills and pace to get past players and help the teams' effort for winning the game. These types of players require basketball shoes that are light in weight, flexible and stable. Some fast players might benefit from a low cut design such as the Nike Vandal Low. However the main problem with this is that they aren't as protected as other on the court but get a heavy speed advantage.

If you can distinguish what type of player you are then you're one step ahead of the crowd and well on your way to finding a basketball shoe that will suit you. If you don't think you fit into anyone of these categories then it would be advised to just go middle ground and pick a basketball shoe that does well in a lot of things but doesn't just focus on one characteristic. That way you'll get a basketball shoe that can benefit you in many areas and also leave you with no risks.

Will the NBA Owners Reverse the Ripple Effect of LeBron James?

By Fern Kuhn

Since LeBron took his talents to South Beach, LeBron has been the most controversial player in NBA history. The viewership of the NBA has risen to heights not seen since Michael Jordan's time. The viewership on cable TV, regular TV, NBAtv.com, downloads on cell phones, live games at even the competitors arena when the Heat and LeBron were playing have made the NBA a popular sport again.

I am going to say that LeBron is my favorite player and why people dislike LeBron is puzzling to me. He never committed a crime or did anything to hurt anyone and yet he is either hated (which is a vulgar word) or very disliked. He may be arrogant at times but look in your mirror and tell me you were never proud or arrogant about something in your life. Can you throw the first stone?

Nonetheless, the NBA owners and David Stern, commissioner (who appears to be on the side of the owners) will reverse the increase in popularity of the NBA.

I think if David Stern and the owners don't come to some agreement before the season begins, they are going to see a drop and huge loss of income, not only for 2011-2012, but for many years to come.

What if some of the great players go and play in Europe that only have a 1 year contract left or free agents now and stay in Europe, the owners of those respective teams will probably lose. We have 3 big players with a one year contract that can opt to stay in Europe if they decide to play there--Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, and Derron Williams. Once in Europe, they do not have to return to the NBA if they decide to play there and then they will be free agents in the summer of 2012.

In reality there are so many players in the summer of 2011 that are becoming free agents or restricted free agents. So if there continues to be an NBA lockout for half a year or a full year, it will be complete chaos of where the players can or will go.

Depending on the owners of the teams and David Stern's arrogance (my opinion) may piss off some of the top players that they will not return to their respective teams because of the greed or the way they handle the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

There are many free agents or restricted free agents for 2012. Restricted free agents include Derrick Rose, Kevin Love, Danilo Gallinari, Eric Gordon, Brook Lopez and Russell Westbrook. A restricted free agent, in essence, is allowed to entertain offers from interested teams, but are at the mercy of their current team. The current team has seven days to match any offer or come within 10 percent of the offer.

New viewers for the 2010-2011 NBA may not come back. One year is a long time or even half a year is a long time for the CBA to be ironed out. The money lost in the long run will absolutey be more than the stubbornness of the owners and David Stern.

The money the teams lost appeared to be the owners' fault and not the players. How about all the players that were fined fouls (unfairly at times). Let David Stern share that with losing teams. I am sure it is a huge amount of money.

Plus, the owners didn't have to pay a large amount of money for mediocre players. Even small market teams have stars like the LA Clippers with Blake Griffin and Oklahoma City Thunder with Kevin Durant and Westbrook.

The owners should stop crying the blues and coach better. Get the good team players to step up. There are good team players on each team but where are the great coaches. They should know that defense wins games. Look at Kevin Love in the Minnesota Timberwoves - amazing defensive player and yet the team had a poor winning record.

The NBA owners should get rid of players who do not live up to their contracts or the team's playing standard. If the players won't play their hardest, hasta la vista players.

David Stern and owners, get it together now. Otherwise David Stern and the owners will be blamed for the decrease in viewership for many years to come and will reverse the LeBron Ripple Effect.

Choosing Basketball Shoes for Kids

By Lydia Quinn

Choosing basketball shoes for kids should be done correctly so your child will keep playing his favorite sport. Remember that the shoes play a factor in how well a player plays. It determines how comfortable the player is and how well the player can move.

Here are some things that you need to consider when choosing basketball shoes for kids.

It is best that you take your child with you when choosing basketball shoes. Let him try several shoes that he likes and determine his comfort size. Some players prefer shoes that are a couple of centimeters larger than their size and some prefer just the exact size.

Make sure that the shoes you'll buy are durable enough to withstand intense play especially if your child is an active player. It will not be good if the sole peels off at critical points of the game. It will greatly help if you could get customer reviews of the store's products or brand if not the exact model of shoes.

Basketball is a very demanding game for a child's feet, and it is certain that he will sweat a lot. Make sure that the shoes will breathe well, as sweaty socks can greatly wear down a player and make him uncomfortable, affecting the outcome of the game.

The laces of the shoes are an important factor as well. Generally, velcro won't work as well for basketball shoes, since they are higher. The laces need to be the perfect length for basketball. If they are too long, then they will come loose easily and require your child to stop mid-game to tie their shoes again. If they are too short, they will be too difficult to tie, but may also come loose easily. It is best to get laces that are too long, then you can use scissors to customize the length to be just right for your child's needs.

Lastly, ankle injuries are very common in basketball games especially if the basketball shoes are not high enough from the ground. But don't choose basketball shoes that are too high and uncomfortable for your child. Make sure that he likes the basketball shoes for the design, so he will not be shy to run around in his shoes and let him be accustomed to his shoes so he could have better maneuverability on the court. Choosing basketball shoes for kids is a critical process but should be made fun to keep him or her enthusiastic with the game.

Taking the time to choose just the right pair of basketball shoes for your child will pay off in the long run. The shoes will last longer, be more comfortable and allow your child to give his or her all when playing the game that they love so much.

Kobe in the All-Star Game

In 2002-2004 Kobe experienced his ups and downs. In 2002, he finished 9 games consecutively and recorded 30 scores in each match. In addition, he got 6.9 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 2.2 steals per game. He reached his summit of professional life. On this occasion, he became the member of All-NBA and All-Defensive 1st team. He also got the third place in the vote of MVP award.
After winning 50 games in the regular games, the Lakers lost to the eventual NBA champions Spurs in the Western Conference semi-finals. In the following season, the Lakers got the super stars and had another opportunity to shock the NBA championship. Before the start of the season, Kobe was charged with sexual assault and was arrested. So Kobe had to miss many games. Or someday he should attend the court in the morning and went to play games later. In the season's last matches, the Lakers fought with the Trail Blazers. Kobe got two clear cut chances to lead the team win the championship, and awarded the Pacific Division title. In the last minutes of the fourth quarter, Kobe made an equalizer by a three points to let the game into overtime. Finally, the game went to the second over time and Kobe made another three points to win the game. The Lakers were able to enter the NBA finals with the help of the future stars. In the final game, they were defeated by the Detroit Pistons who got his first championship since 1990. In the series, Kobe contributed 22.6 points and 4.4 assists per game. Thus their successful trainer didn't make an extension deal with the team and O'Neil was traded to the Miami Heat. The following day, Kobe declined the offer of Clippers. And he renewed a seven-year contract which was valued 13.64 billion dollars.
In the 2004-05 seasons, Kobe had a badly reputation for his last season's matter. Thus, he was controversial and criticism. A new book named The Last Season recorded the last season's turbulence. It had amount of criticisms of Kobe. In the midway of the season, because of the health problem the coach quit the job. After the leaving of the major coach, the second trainer took over the rest of the game. Despite Kobe averaged 27.6 points in the league, the Lakers still can't enter the playoffs. After the game, Kobe couldn't enter the NBA All-Defensive Team and just got in the third team of the All-NBA. In this season, he opened his feuds with Allen and Malone.
2005-2006 seasons were a turning point of his basketball life. Although there were contradiction between Kobe and his former coach, Jackson still came back to the team to train the teammates. Kobe agreed with this action. According to various performance proofs, these two guys had a great time in the second cooperation. They helped the Lakers came back to the playoffs again. It was also the best season for Kobe in his professional career. In a game with Dallas, he scored 62 points which was higher than the point of the Dallas. He was regarded as the first player since the introduction of the timer. Kobe made a new record to the NBA.

Do You Know How to Get Recruited to Play College Basketball?

By Eugene Kendrick

So you want to play college basketball. Well I don't know what your skill set is, which is one factor in determining if you can play. The other factor obviously is your grades. Nevertheless there are hundreds of potential Division 1, 2, 3, junior college (juco), and NAIA colleges and university that have basketball programs.

With that in mind all players are not Division 1 ready. However, this does not mean you can not play college basketball. But you must be realistic concerning your basketball circumstances grades and ability.

Don't let your ego keep you from playing the game you love. Listen, if you are offered to play basketball at Larry's Big O Tires University and you don't have any other offers, go check it out. I always say if you can get an education out of the deal and play the game you love, hey. But you know that not every college or university gives out scholarship. You might be able to walk on or get a partial scholarship. My point is don't give up on your dream to play at the next level.

Now here's the problem. How does the connection between you and a college coach come about?

There are 2 ways. They find you or you find them.

I'm going to tell you that playing on a summer travel basketball team is the best way to get seen. College coaches recruit during the designate summer period. That's how they find most of their players. But if you are not on a summer travel basketball team, how will they know about you? Possible word of mouth or maybe great stats during high school in season play.

There are too many players are waiting around thinking some coach is going to offer them an opportunity to play. Meaning the player has not invested anytime in investigating opportunities for themselves. They wait until their senior year then they're running around trying to find somewhere to play.

I think playing on a summer travel basketball team is the best way to give your self a chance or even better chance to play college basketball.

I'm sure you understand the benefits of a summer travel basketball team. One word Exposure!

Here is probably the biggest problem. What if your travel team is not going to the tournaments that college coaches are attending? That is something you will have to talk to your travel team coach about.

Well I know how to solve your problem!

Guess who can give the college coach the ability to see you play even if they physically can't attend by watching it online anytime the want utilizes the power of online video. Meaning you need to get video footage of games you have played in. Now I going to tell you college coaches don't want to see highlights or staged workouts. They want to see game footage!

The last thing I will mention to players is attitude. I've been coaching high school basketball since 2005. No coach wants to deal with a player's bad attitude. At the college level it can get tough because your coach is going to get on you. They may scream they may cuss. That's part of it. You have to understand they made a discussion to invest in you believing you will get the job done. It's their job to push you beyond expectations. If they don't get players where they need to be, that may be the difference of them having a job.

There is no guarantee that you will play at the next level. So work hard and hopefully that will help you be a better basketball player.

Good luck with your quest in continuing your basketball career at a collegiate level.

Here is the website I was talking about!

NextLevel101.com is a website you can learn more about getting recruited to play college basketball by using online video. The benefits of this type of exposure online are immeasurable and the best part... it's FREE!

How to Become a Basketball Coach

By Charles Atwater

The journey to become a basketball coach has been a continuing educational process that involved patience, an open mind for learning, and a strong desire to help young players develop their skills while honing your skills as a coach as well. I characterize the process of coaching particularly for novice or new basketball coaches as a journey because of the many steps and facets of the game that you will learn along the way. Coaching is a humbling but yet a rewarding adventure no matter how many games you win or lose because it is always about the kids.

I began coaching in a local recreational league when my son was in the fourth grade because he was interested in playing basketball. Up until this time, the only basketball I played was in recreational settings and with friends, not because I did not love the game but because I became a very good athlete in another sport, swimming, and the two sports competitive seasons overlapped. So armed with my very limited knowledge of the game I volunteered to coach my son's team and quickly learned that recreational basketball was just that; first and foremost it was recreational and young folks want to have fun. My responsibility as I saw it was to make sure we are organized on the floor offensively and defensively, that everyone had an opportunity to play, and we had fun.

This experience for both my son and myself lite our competitive juices and we began to look for a more competitive outlet to play basketball. We found another team that we are currently playing with that offered a more structured environment that focused on player skill development. This new organization had some very skilled and knowledgeable coaches but as I found out, all organizations need volunteers and so I volunteered to help coach my son's fifth grade team.

As a novice basketball coach and a volunteer I was given the chance to learn more about the fundamentals of basketball and skill development. I increased my knowledge about dribbling, making lay-ups with both the right and left hands, game management, clock management, and constructive encouragement. I attend local coaching clinics to learn from successful college and high school coaches about how to run practices, skill development drills, and coaching philosophies.

This has become a dream come true although my wife sometimes thinks I am nuts. My son has completed the eighth grade and we mutually decided several years ago that I would not be his coach and this has served both of us well. He has a fresh set of eyes and new coaches to work with. I can engage new players not as a parent, sorry son, but purely as a coach more objectively and now we both can ride home from practice more satisfied with our practices.

This basketball coaching journey evolved from a novice volunteer, volunteer assistant coach, and now as a volunteer basketball coach and is still evolving in many ways. I have coached now 6 years and have achieved some measure of success. During the 2010 season, my third/fourth grade team were National Runner-ups at the American Youth Basketball Tour Tournament (AYBT) in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Likewise, in 2011 my fifth grade team won the National AYBT Championship in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

While success can be measured quantitatively, I prefer to measure success qualitatively; by the joy in a players eye when they create a defensive turnover and we convert it into a basket. I measure success when a player digs deep down during a tight game and chases a loose ball that we need to stay in the game. I measure success during a time-out when as a team we can make changes offensively or defensively while substituting players and we never miss an assignment.

For me it is not about the wins or losses but is about the kids and then I can proudly wear the title of coach. Beginning basketball coaching can be frustrating, overwhelming, but yet fun. Don't give up but embrace each moment and of a young person's life that you touch.

Making Free Throws - A Few Tips Of The Basics Of Shooting On The Foul Line

By Jorge Joe Moreno

Professionals have their own methods and strategies to clinch free throws through the net. But, beginners or amateurs should build their shooting form on specific basics when shooting from the free throw line.

Free throw shooting is very important and should be consistently trained. First, it can often be the difference between a victory or loss for a team, especially if the opponents commit a foul in the late seconds of the game. And second, improving free throw skillfulness can offer to further develop other shooting techniques.

Here are some free throw tips to remember when shooting foul shots:

Start in a comfortable position. The feet should be parallel to each other and shoulder-wide apart. One should stand slightly behind the line and well balanced to be able to completely focus on the shot.

Afterwords, on should bend the knees a bit and shift the weight to the balls of the feet.

The shooting hand should be at the seams of the ball. The thumb should provide support on the ball but the force should come from the finger and hand pads of the shooting hand. The other hand should support the shooting hand by providing balance for the ball.

At this point, it is important that the shooter concentrate and visualize the target.

The foot on the side of the shooting hand, shooting elbow and shooting forefinger should all be aligned with the center of the rim.

The elbows should be bent at a 90 degree angle. Release the ball from the fingertips. You would have a good follow through if your fingers are still pointing to the target.

The ball should be shot with a good arc. This is because a higher trajectory or flight of the ball will increase the possibility of hitting the wide area of the hoop.

One should never rush into shooting while at the foul line. Instead, it is better to be relaxed and completely focused on hitting the target.

A pre-shot ritual is very common amongst many players. This routine may serve to allow them to relax and concentrate. Some dribble and spin the ball. Others mimic a shot and some even close their eyes and take a deep breath.

The pre-shot routine should be comfortable. The routine is more than just a set of movements. Instead, while on the free throw line and performing the routine, these set of movements initiates shooting using "muscle memory." Many feel this consistency associated with a specific routine on the foul line, serves to ease the tension which makes making the basket. This ritual helps to teach the muscles to react in the same way, every time, while on the foul line.

One should also remember that in a game, making or shooting free throws is often done in a noisy and high-pressure environment. To prepare for this challenge, one should practice shooting free throws with distractions and pressure. This rehearsal may offer to help keep one focused during those game breaking moments in the game.

In the end, the best way to improve on the foul line is to practice them often and to enlist the help of a good shooting coach. Basketball is not only about natural skill and talent. Instead, success on the court is achieved only through practice, patience, determination and excellent teaching.
