Do You Know How to Get Recruited to Play College Basketball?

By Eugene Kendrick

So you want to play college basketball. Well I don't know what your skill set is, which is one factor in determining if you can play. The other factor obviously is your grades. Nevertheless there are hundreds of potential Division 1, 2, 3, junior college (juco), and NAIA colleges and university that have basketball programs.

With that in mind all players are not Division 1 ready. However, this does not mean you can not play college basketball. But you must be realistic concerning your basketball circumstances grades and ability.

Don't let your ego keep you from playing the game you love. Listen, if you are offered to play basketball at Larry's Big O Tires University and you don't have any other offers, go check it out. I always say if you can get an education out of the deal and play the game you love, hey. But you know that not every college or university gives out scholarship. You might be able to walk on or get a partial scholarship. My point is don't give up on your dream to play at the next level.

Now here's the problem. How does the connection between you and a college coach come about?

There are 2 ways. They find you or you find them.

I'm going to tell you that playing on a summer travel basketball team is the best way to get seen. College coaches recruit during the designate summer period. That's how they find most of their players. But if you are not on a summer travel basketball team, how will they know about you? Possible word of mouth or maybe great stats during high school in season play.

There are too many players are waiting around thinking some coach is going to offer them an opportunity to play. Meaning the player has not invested anytime in investigating opportunities for themselves. They wait until their senior year then they're running around trying to find somewhere to play.

I think playing on a summer travel basketball team is the best way to give your self a chance or even better chance to play college basketball.

I'm sure you understand the benefits of a summer travel basketball team. One word Exposure!

Here is probably the biggest problem. What if your travel team is not going to the tournaments that college coaches are attending? That is something you will have to talk to your travel team coach about.

Well I know how to solve your problem!

Guess who can give the college coach the ability to see you play even if they physically can't attend by watching it online anytime the want utilizes the power of online video. Meaning you need to get video footage of games you have played in. Now I going to tell you college coaches don't want to see highlights or staged workouts. They want to see game footage!

The last thing I will mention to players is attitude. I've been coaching high school basketball since 2005. No coach wants to deal with a player's bad attitude. At the college level it can get tough because your coach is going to get on you. They may scream they may cuss. That's part of it. You have to understand they made a discussion to invest in you believing you will get the job done. It's their job to push you beyond expectations. If they don't get players where they need to be, that may be the difference of them having a job.

There is no guarantee that you will play at the next level. So work hard and hopefully that will help you be a better basketball player.

Good luck with your quest in continuing your basketball career at a collegiate level.
