Top Ten Gift Ideas For Basketball Players

Old, but still lots of fun

Basketball players can be tough to purchase gifts for unless you are in the know. My husband loves playing basketball and has opened my eyes to the possibilities.

1. Jumpsoles

Jumpsoles" are platforms that attach onto your sneakers they focus your body weight onto your calves to train you to bounce off the balls of your feet like a "powerful cat"! With continued practice they will help the player to increase his/her vertical jump. My husband has used them and found great success and improvement in his vertical jump. You can also purchase the Proprioceptor which attaches to the Jumpsoles" to make them even more effective, my husband also uses these. Adding the Proprioceptor will bring results faster. The cost of the Jumpsoles" is $69.95 and with the Proprioceptor system they are $99.90.

2. Ball & Water Bag

There are a wide variety of bags available, the key is to find one that will hold a bag and at the very least some water. I have seen them with room for sneakers as well. This gift is practical and will be used often. You will need to decide whether to purchase a backpack or duffle style. For players, like my husband, who ride their bike or walk to the courts a backpack works much better. For someone looking to keep an extra set of clothes the duffle may be the way to go. Another option is the Original Ballbag ($24.99), which can be purchased in the logo of their favorite team, this is worn across the body on a angle or a newer edition is in backpack style, has more storage room and a heftier price tag ($59.99). Bags geared toward basketball are better then a run of the mill bag because they will have room for the ball! My favorite has been one we picked up at Target, it is an NBA drawstring backpack style with rope straps, he can fit a ball and a gallon of water!

3. SLAM Magazine

Give a subscription to Slam and you're giving the magazine that takes its readers behind the scenes and inside the NBA. Slam is $12.97 for a yearly subscription! They will also send a gift card so you can personally announce your gift subscription. With a subscription a lot of online features also become active for forums where your player can exchange comments with other players!

4. Protective Gear

I would never have thought of this but recently I have seen how easily injury can occur. Protect your player with any or all of the following suggestions. Begin with mouth guards, they can be purchased at any sporting goods store and range from $1.99 to $19.99, they have guards geared for basketball and even for adults and youth.

McDavid is well known for their HexPad Technology, which provide unsurpassed comfort and protection. In addition to offering elbow, knee, and ankle braces and pads they offer shirts and shorts with built in protection. The 7910 HexPad 3 Pad Body Shirt ($59.99) is a professional sleeveless compression shirt made to protect the ribs and spine. The compression fabric is also made to support large muscle groups to reduce muscle pulls and fatigue.

Sometimes a player just needs a little extra support, braces and supports can be purchased at any sporting goods store as well.

5. Sneakers

Basketball requires a certain type of sneaker. Some people are easy to purchase sneakers for and do not need to try them on, depending on the person you are buying them for you may want to take them with you or get as much information as you can before hand from the player and then purchase them from a store with a good return/exchange policy. If you opt for the latter make sure that the time frame for returns will not be over when the gift is given!

Fortunately for me, my husband is always the same size, so I can shop pretty easily. Although he has been happy in the past with Addidas and Reebok, And 1 comes out as his favorite always.

I would be remiss if I did not mention there is a new sneaker on the market created Stephon Marbury that is going to be selling for $14.95, he felt that he wanted to make sneakers more affordable. They are going to be sold exclusively at Steve and Barry's.

6. Sleeveless Shirt that Absorbs Sweat

As anyone who plays basketball or knows someone who does, sweat is usually an issue. With this sort of shirt it makes playing more enjoyable for the player since they are not saturated and remain cooler.

New Balance offers a fantastic Sleeveless Temp Top for $25.00. It is designed with Lighting Dry fabric so as you perspire, moisture is wicked away from your skin. They also offer shorts ($27.99) in this fabric, as well, which can also be useful.

7. Basketball Hoop or Shooting Ring

Depending on the space available your options may be limited. You can purchase a free standing hoop with backboard and stand. These are sold to either be permanently placed in the ground or on rolling platforms.

You can also purchase a single hoop that attaches to an outside wall. Very similar to this standard hoop is a shooting ring, which is smaller than a regular hoop to improve shooting aim. These items can be found in sporting goods stores online and in person, retailers like Target also carry them. Prices range too greatly to list depending on which type it is and also if it is professional this will increase price.

8. Lessons from a Retired Pro

Often times retired Professionals Players, especially from Europe will offer lessons. If you are lucky enough to live in the Orlando area you can get lessons from Kelvin Coggins, a former professional player in Europe.

You can also check special event auctions, sometimes professional players volunteer to be auctioned off for lessons. This of course, can be quite costly.

9. Personalized Jersey with their Favorite Pro Team

You have a choice between Authentic, cost ranging from $189.99 to $219.99, or Replicas, cost ranging from $59.99 to $69.99. The authentic is a high quality jersey your player will love for years to come, especially with his/her name and number personalized on it!

10. Tickets to a game

You can purchase tickets to a local game whether college or professional it is a gift to please. Make sure to get two so he/she does not have to go alone! I find that as much as my husband enjoys going to watch the Knicks, he is just as happy to go watch anyone play. He loves playing and loves watching!

If you head to ticket master you can search by sport, basketball specifically, then enter your zip for any and all basketball games in your area!

Happy Shopping and if all else fails a new basketball is always nice too! Especially the new NBA balls!
